Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents caused the explosion.

A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official was convinced the explosion had occurred on a story above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
