Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after the team's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are part of the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is presently at another club, which would create a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton head coach - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club board as they start the search of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United player is out of work meaning Wolves would not need to pay any compensation.
