At least 64 Dead in Rio's Largest Security Action on Organized Crime
At least 64 individuals died in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's past.
Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 individuals were arrested.
Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Residents have described the hillside area - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.
Access ways continue shut across the area.
Organized Crime Spread
The Red Command group have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the raid, in addition to numerous weapons.
Raid Preparation
The coordinated mission by various security forces follows a twelve-month inquiry.
Numerous alleged criminals are considered members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
