Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.

The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the win, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory over the same opponent.

Final Round Excitement

Rai started the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger edged one shot ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.

{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more person. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
